NEEM Tree-Arishta, Nimba, Vepa...Margosa.-

dt 6th Thursday 2011. 
The Sanskrit name of Neem is Nimba or Arishtha meaning the reliever of the sickness.
These photos depict Neem and other  trees inc Peepul with two Shree Vighneshwara temples near my residence. The left side temple is at BSNL Tower office compound with a peepul tree . The right side temple has a Neem tree and the leaves have entwined. This is seen in many places in South India and has many traditional explanations- These pics are  at the entrance of our  appropriately named  "Greenways Lane".

The daily prayer and a complete Sankashti Chaturti pooja  is regularly done by a purohit with local residents attending every month. See pic below: Shree Vighneshwara in Sankashti Alankara- Doorva Mala.
Thiru. Muthu and his family and co-workers, with all devotion, along with many of us Residents take great interest, participate, contribute. After Sankashti pooja the  pongal prasad and other items are distributed to all.With Nature and Cooperation a spirit of  "Sat Bhavana" prevails, even  in the midst of  a busy metro.The spirit of Yajna is seen in all aspects with parasparam bhavana. .

Description :
 
It is a tall evergreen tree with the small bright green leaves and is easily grown all over in India esp in South . It grows up to 100 feet height and has small green fruit and white flowers .
It blossoms in spring with the small white flowers. It has a straight trunk. Its bark is hard rough and scaly, fissured even in small trees. The colour of the bark is brown grayish. The leaves are alternate and consists of several leaflets with serrated edges. Its flowers are small and white in colour. The  edible fruit is oval, round and thin skinned which birds and squirrels enjoy. 
It is the best herbal disinfectant, insecticide and Cleaner of all pollution inc air - and it is well regarded by all of society.

    Medicinal uses : Neem holds medicinal value. Each part of neem has been used in Ayurvedic medicines for more than 4000 years. Neem oil extracted from its seeds is used in medicines, pest control and cosmetics etc.

    Its leaves are used in the treat Chickenpox..
    In the Hindu tradition esp in South India, it is believed that the Goddess of the chickenpox, Sithala devi lives in the Neem tree.
    Many more local customs are also associated with Neem trees and leaves too.

    Other uses : Common village folk India use its twigs to brush their teeth. Neem is used for rehabilitating the waste land areas. Neem seed pulp is useful for methane gas production. It is also useful as carbohydrate which is rich base for other industrial fermentations. Neem bark contains tannins which are used in tanning and dyeing. The bark of the yields the fiber that is woven into ropes. Neem cake is widely used in India as fertilizer for sugarcane, vegetable and other cash crops.

    Neem tea is taken to reduce headache and fever. Its flowers are used to cure intestinal problems. Neem bark acts as an analgesic and can cure high fever as of malaria. Even the skin diseases can be cured from the Neem leaves. In Ayurveda and local medicines Neem can even purify many diseases.
